Welcome to ESS’s Software Innovation Lab homepage!

ESS continues to invest in our Software Innovation Lab where we explore and prototype exciting new technologies. Our focus in the last year has been Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), or Blockchain as many refer to it, and 3D Geospatial application development. Towards that end, we have instituted our Software Innovation Lab, a software development incubator for researching, developing, and testing innovative software applications, systems, platforms, or methodologies that have the potential for solving the serious challenges that government agencies have in today’s global IT market.

Our goal is threefold:

1. Research and identify potential innovative software technologies.

2. Guide the innovative technology through the testing and compliance process to become a certified government capability.

3. Work with our IC contacts to attain an official arrangement (contract, MOU, MOA, prototype effort, etc.) for integrating the innovative technology into the customers internal infrastructure.

Geospatial v/r

Exceptional Software has a long history of providing 3D geospatial solutions to our IC customers, from early exploration of VRML in the late 1990’s to Google Earth 3D globes starting in the mid 2000’s to webGL 3D mapping applications over the past handful of years. We don’t just make cool 3D visualizations, though, as we have always focused on how to provide solutions that provide business value to our customers. The question we need to answer now is what is the Next Big Thing on the technological horizon for 3D geospatial.


One potential for the next generation geospatial solution is with the Oculus Rift VR technology and Google Earth Enterprise Open Source – or as Oculus calls it Google Earth VR. Within our Software Innovation Lab we will be exploring the potential of this technology to provide those types of geospatial tools and capabilities that we know our IC customers find useful.

Distributed Ledger Tech

Distributed Ledger Technologies (or “blockchain” technologies) are poised to sweep across the globe and fundamentally change the way we think of data security and online identity. Many people hear “blockchain” and immediately equate it to Bitcoin, which isn’t quite accurate. Bitcoin is one implementation of blockchain or DLT solution, but it only scratches the surface of what blockchains are capable of doing for us. ESS is working with multiple blockchain platform providers to bring DLT solutions to our government customers.


For over a year now, ESS has been working towards positioning itself as a “Center of Excellence” for the Federal government on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. Through our deep, personal contacts within the IC and years of successes on multiple IC contracts, we have quickly built a network of individuals and organizations within the government that are closely following our progress and initiatives.


Our goals are the following:

  • Defining appropriate use cases of real-world problems that the government needs new solutions to;
  • Understanding how blockchain and DLT can be applied to those problems;
  • Prototyping solutions in different DLT platforms;
  • Educating the government on the potential of blockchain and DLT
We are working on two broad categories of use cases using blockchain and DLT – Secure Compartments and Secure Communication Channels. Secure Compartments solutions focus on protecting user data by using blockchain as the basis for access control and auditability of each secure compartment and include use cases in system event protection, office collaboration toolsets, and supply chain management solutions. Secure Communication Channels focus on using DLT to provide “blockchain VPN’s” for securely transmitting commands for such things as SCADA networks and the U.S. Nuclear Command, Control and Communications (NC3) system.


Recently, we have forged new relationships with IBM and Oracle to bring their blockchain platforms to ESS’s Software Innovation Lab, where we will be building prototype applications in each technology to demo to our government customers. We are also working with smaller DLT vendors, such as Truffle Suite, to showcase their offerings as well to the government.
